Don't Get Burned!

As promised, behold the first round of sunscreen reviews in which you will get my take on five sunscreens. (In case you missed it, you can find my post on how to pick the perfect sunscreen here.) This first round includes only mineral sunscreens. Even though I think mineral is the way to go for both your health and the planet’s, I recognize the pros and cons to both so you will get a mix of mineral and chemical sunscreens in the next post. I’m still on a mission to find the perfect sunscreen for super active days, so send any recommendations my way and I’ll be sure to check them out! If you have any questions about the sunscreen you’re using shoot me an email: Kristen@WayfareCollective.com.

**Important note (since I know you are all active and need robust sunscreens most of the time): The two DeVita products in this review are NOT water resistant, so don’t make the mistake of thinking they are then ending up lobster red after a couple hours in the ocean. They are, however, fabulous for a day when you still want protection but don’t feel like lathering on the thick stuff.

Alba Very Emollient Sunscreen SPF 30

  • Mineral sunscreen
  • Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide
  • Skin deep score: 2
  • Water Resistant: 80 minutes
  • Why I like this sunscreen: Alba works well for us water babies. This sunscreen may be hard to rub in (as most water resistant mineral sunscreens) but I feel like it really keeps up with me whether I am on a run or playing in the ocean. For those of you with a little more arm and leg hair…this one is a you-know-what to rub in. But, it will do its job. Alba also has a sunscreen that is both mineral and chemical (but doesn’t have oxybenzone) so if you are looking to avoid the chemicals, be sure to get the one that says “mineral” right on the front.
  • Price: $11.49 (4 oz)

Beyond Coastal, Natural lip and face cream SPF 31

  • Mineral sunscreen
  • Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide
  • Skin deep score: 1
  • Water Resistant: 40 minutes
  • Why I love this sunscreen: I take this with me everywhere! It is small, effective, and one of the best scoring sunscreens out there. It is rather thick so I tend to use it only one my face, unless in a pinch. It is only water resistant for 40 minutes, so make sure to reapply often.
  • Price: $6.99 (0.9 oz)

Beyond Coastal, Active Sunscreen SPF 30

  • Chemical sunscreen
  • Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide
  • Skin Deep Score: The website does not have a ranking for the exact product I used. Let's go ahead and make the assumption that it is the same as the Beyond Coastal above because the ingredient list is similar.
  • Water Resistant: 80 minutes
  • Why I dislike this sunscreen: That's right, the other Beyond Coastal is my go-to but I cannot recommend this one. I used this product while training for a marathon last summer and it literally turned my sweat neon yellow. What caused this, I have no ideal; all I can tell you is my white running shirt turned bright yellow. While the stain came out in the wash, this was pretty unappealing to deal with on a two hour run.
  • Price: $13.99 (4 oz)

DeVita, Solar Body Block SPF 30+

  • Mineral sunscreen
  • Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide
  • Skin deep score: 1
  • Water Resistant: NOT water resistant
  • Why I love this sunscreen: This is a great sunscreen for those days when you’ll be out in the sun but not getting wet. It feels like normal lotion and rubs on like a dream (because it is not water resistant). This may seem like a pricey item but at 7 oz it is actually very competitive with other brands, which usually come in 3-4 oz.
  • Approx. Price: $27.95 (7 oz)

DeVita, Solar Protectice Moisturizer SPF 30+

  • Mineral sunscreen
  • Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide
  • Skin deep score: 1
  • Water Resistant: NOT water resistant
  • Why I love this sunscreen: This has been my go-to daily sunscreen/moisturizer for a few years. For a sunscreen with SPF 30+ it feels like a normal moisturizer. Again, one of the reasons it is so lovely to apply is because it is not water resistant, so don’t trust it for a day on the lake.
  • Approx. Price: $25.95 (2.5 oz)
